A WOMAN convicted of smuggling nearly 3kg of crystal meth through the airport, reportedly as part of a drug-trading network, has lost her appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court.
The High Criminal Court had sentenced the 40-year-old Pakistani woman, who had never been to Bahrain prior to her arrival at the airport, to five years behind bars and fined BD3,000 in August.
Though she insisted on her innocence, claiming that she was ‘set up’ by individuals from her home country, judges at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court ruled to uphold the previous verdict.
In a hand-written letter submitted to judges, the woman claimed that she was offered a job as a cleaner in Bahrain by a man, who also asked her to deliver a bag to an individual in the country upon her arrival.
She said she has to support her family and the salary offered was good, and so she did as she was asked.
“I was desperate to make an income,” she added.
According to a customs officer who detected the smuggling, the woman had arrived on a flight from Lahore and was asked if she had anything to declare, to which she said no.
However, upon searching her suitcase, the policeman found powder hidden in the bag’s base, wrapped in plastic bags and black electrical tape.
Her case was then referred to the Anti-Narcotics Directorate, which reported her to the Public Prosecution, which in turn decided to charge her with smuggling.
Court documents elaborate that the man who gave her the powdered methamphetamine, weighing a total of 2,978g, was named ‘Bilal’.
