Bahrain is set to celebrate its rich heritage with the much-awaited Date Palm Tree Festival which will be unveiled next week.
The sixth edition of the annual event, Khairat Al Nakhla (Palm Tree Bounties), will run from July 30 to August 2, from 8am to 5pm at the Farmers Market in Hoorat A’ali.
Organised by the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, in co-operation with the Farmers Market Department of the Bahrain Development Bank and other firms, the event aims to showcase local farmers and small businesses, while also raising awareness about the kingdom’s heritage.
In addition to discovering diverse Bahraini date varieties, visitors will enjoy fun activities, including traditional basket weaving and crafts, children’s educational workshops and games, themed gastronomic delights and much more, all under one roof. There are more than 200 varieties of dates with different shapes and flavours, such as Khalas, Sukkary, Medjool, Mubashara, Khawaja, Gharrah, Merziban and more.
Last year’s festival witnessed the participation of around 60 farmers, featuring a variety of date and palm products like ice-creams, sweets and pickles made from the fruit, frond-weaved baskets and more.
The event aims to showcase the permanent Farmers Market, which remains open year-round and offers residents, citizens and visitors a chance to buy fresh produce and local products directly from entrepreneurs.
