The body of an Indian expat from Sharjah was repatriated on Tuesday, three months after his death, while his family had believed he was in jail during that time.
The mortal remains of 42-year-old Jinu Raj Divakaran were scheduled to be buried in the UAE after going unclaimed for three months. His family in India was informed of his death just in time to intervene.
Divakaran, a former driving instructor and taxi driver, collapsed on a roadside in Sharjah on July 14 and was rushed to a hospital by ambulance, where he died the same day.
His sister, the only relative he was in contact with, had been desperately searching for him through community members in Sharjah after all communication ceased in July. She was misinformed that her brother had been arrested for a traffic offence and was in jail.
Seeking help, she approached a senior lawyer in Kerala, who then contacted volunteers from the UAE’s Kerala expatriate community. The volunteers checked hospitals and eventually the forensic department, where they discovered that
Divakaran had died of cardiac arrest and that his body had been kept in the Sharjah Police mortuary.
As the body remained unclaimed for more than three months, UAE regulations required it to be buried locally. The burial was scheduled for Monday, October 27, prompting urgent action.
With the help of a legal consulting firm, a court order was secured to repatriate Mr Divakaran’s mortal remains to India.
