Two unemployed expats allegedly hid drugs inside a pair of socks tied to the underside of their car before being arrested, the High Criminal Court heard yesterday.
The duo was caught after jumping a red light and causing a mild traffic accident, just as undercover police officers were trailing them while they were distributing narcotics in the Manama area.
Officers found 21 rolls or ‘joints’ of methamphetamine (shabu) in a sock, weighing 22.13gm, and a single roll of marijuana (12.07gm) in the other.
The two Pakistanis, aged 41 and 31, were charged with importing, storing, promoting and distributing marijuana and shabu.
“I received information about the first defendant’s illicit activities, and obtained a warrant from the Public Prosecution to arrest and search him,” an Anti-Narcotics Directorate policeman testified.
“In April, we got information that he was in Naim, on foot and accompanied by another person – the other defendant.
“We saw the first defendant pull something from the front bottom of the vehicle, then return to the car.
We followed them until they approached the Naim Police Station, when they jumped a red traffic light and caused a minor accident.”
Officers searched the car and found the socks hanging from the undercarriage with ‘items used to promote drugs’. The second defendant was also reportedly carrying a plastic bag containing 20 joints of shabu weighing 21.09gm.
More items were reportedly uncovered in the first defendant’s apartment, including adhesive tape and containers for narcotics.
Policemen accused the two Pakistanis of working for a drug network spanning the country, and the defendants admitted to possessing narcotics with the intention to trade them for financial gain.
The hearing was adjourned to July 19, when one of the defendants will be assigned a state-appointed lawyer.
