BAHRAIN collected 1.477 million tonnes of municipal waste in 2025, up by 5.15 per cent from 1.405m tonnes in 2024, according to the latest statistics released by the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry.
The increase was driven mainly by a rise in construction waste, followed by waste generated by other economic activities, household waste and manufacturing, while waste from the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector declined.
Household waste remained the largest category, accounting for 601,000 tonnes, or 40.72pc of the total. It was followed by waste from other economic activities (26.79pc), construction (21.42pc), agriculture, forestry and fishing (6.12pc), and manufacturing (4.94pc).
Of the total waste managed, 78.54pc was disposed of through sanitary landfill, 20.86pc was recycled and 0.6pc was treated using other methods.
The Capital Governorate generated the highest volume of household waste, accounting for 37.5pc of the total, followed by the Northern (30.4pc), Southern (16.7pc) and Muharraq (15.4pc) governorates.
The report showed all 1.603m residents benefited from municipal waste collection services.
Organic materials made up the largest share of municipal waste (40.28pc), followed by plastics (21.65pc) and paper and cardboard (9.88pc).
By the end of 2025, Bahrain had four landfill and waste treatment facilities with a combined design capacity of 33.606m tonnes.
