Walk through any pharmacy or supermarket and you will notice that almost every cosmetic and cosmeceutical product carries an expiry date.
Hand creams, body lotions, facial moisturisers, acne solutions, shampoos, cleansers and many other products are routinely discarded once that date has passed. This raises an important question: is this always scientifically justified?
There is no doubt that some medical products require strict expiry dates. Vaccines, injectable medicines, intravenous fluids, biological products, sterile eye drops and certain temperature-sensitive medications can lose potency or become unsafe over time. In these cases, expiry dates are essential to protect patients.
However, should the same principle apply to a simple hand cream or body lotion? Should a topical acne solution be considered unusable the day after its printed expiry date? Many consumers find this difficult to understand.
Research over several decades has shown that numerous medicines remain chemically stable well beyond their labelled expiry dates when stored correctly. In fact, studies conducted under the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Shelf Life Extension Programme have demonstrated that many medications retain their potency for years after their labelled expiry date. This does not mean that all products should be used indefinitely, but it does suggest that expiry dates are often conservative.
The cosmetic industry also deserves discussion. Many creams and lotions contain preservatives that are specifically designed to prevent bacterial and fungal growth. If a product has been stored properly, remains unopened and shows no change in colour, smell or texture, one may reasonably ask whether immediate disposal is always necessary.
The financial and environmental consequences are considerable. Millions of perfectly usable cosmetic products are discarded every year, creating unnecessary waste and increasing costs for consumers. This contributes to environmental pollution through discarded packaging and the avoidable manufacturing of replacement products.
Rather than relying on rigid dates alone, manufacturers and regulators could provide consumers with more meaningful information about product stability after opening, storage conditions and signs that a product has genuinely deteriorated.
This is not an argument against safety. It is an argument for evidence-based regulation. Expiry dates should reflect scientific evidence rather than overly cautious assumptions or commercial interests. Consumers deserve transparency about how these dates are determined and whether they truly represent the point at which a product becomes ineffective or unsafe.
It is time to reopen this discussion. In an era that values sustainability, reducing waste and responsible consumerism, we should ask whether the current approach to expiry dates for many cosmetics and non-sterile topical products remains scientifically justified.
