Bahrain has strongly condemned the targeting of the East-West oil pipeline in the Riyadh and Medina regions of Saudi Arabia by drones launched from Iraqi territory, which resulted in injuries and damage to property.
The Foreign Ministry described the attack as a blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, as well as an attack on vital civilian infrastructure affecting the security of energy supplies.
It reiterated Bahrain’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, and underlined Saudi Arabia’s right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and security.
The ministry stressed the need to prevent the territory of any state from being used as a launching point for attacks against neighbouring countries and expressed support for the efforts of Iraq to prevent the recurrence of such attacks.
Saudi Arabia also condemned the targeting of the oil pipeline.
In a statement, the Saudi foreign ministry said the kingdom has chosen not to respond at this stage and to support the efforts of the Iraqi government.
This is based on a request by the Iraqi prime minister to give the Iraqi government the opportunity to take measures to prevent attacks launched from its territory against Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries, it said.
The ministry stressed that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, facilities, citizens, and residents.
Iraq pledged not to tolerate any activity that could endanger it and its security or undermine relations with friendly countries. Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi stressed Iraq’s keenness to maintain its relations with brotherly and friendly countries and prevent using its territory, airspace, and capabilities to jeopardise the security and interests of those countries.
Riyadh had earlier announced that the East-West pipeline came under several attacks early on Thursday, prompting the pipeline to be shut down as a precaution.
Two people were injured and a mosque and several buildings were damaged after a projectile launched by the Houthis struck the southern Jazan region last night, Saudi Civil Defence said.
