FOOTBALL – TWO former head coaches of Bahrain’s senior men’s football national team are now at the helm of Thailand’s senior men’s squad.
Former English footballer Peter Taylor, aged 73, was this week confirmed by the Thailand Football Association as joining the coaching staff of compatriot and head tactician Anthony Hudson, 45.
The pair both guided the kingdom’s national team in the past, with Taylor in charge from July 2011 to October 2012 and Hudson later taking on the responsibilities from August 2013 to August 2014.
“Regarding Peter Taylor, we wanted to add another support staff member to help with training,” Hudson was quoted as saying by the Thai FA. “Of course, he’s not here to replace anyone or any of the coaching staff, but to support everyone and help make the work more efficient.”
According to the Thai FA, Taylor had originally brought in Hudson as an assistant during his time in Bahrain, with Hudson later also taking over as head coach of the kingdom’s under-23 men’s team in March 2012.
Taylor has extensive experience working at both national team and club levels, having managed sides such as Leicester City, Hull City, Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, and Gillingham in England.
He also has experience with England’s youth national teams, having managed their under-20 team at the Fifa U-20 World Cup in 2013. In addition, Taylor had served as head coach of the England Under-21 national team and also as interim coach of the England senior men’s national team in 2000, during which time he appointed Sir David Beckham as national team captain for the first time.
Hudson and Taylor will be guiding Thailand in division one of the 2026 Fifa Asean Cup in Indonesia from tomorrow.
The Thais are in Group B of the eight-nation competition alongside Vietnam, the Philippines, and Pakistan. Group A is composed of Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, and hosts Indonesia.
