A scorned lover allegedly kidnapped his former girlfriend and her new flame with the help of a pal, in a rampage of revenge for breaking his heart.
The Bahraini defendant and his friend, both aged 34, are standing trial on charges of robbery, assault, kidnapping and holding the Russian expatriate captive under the threat of grave harm.
The court heard that the couple had broken up well before the July incident and the obsessive ex had tried unsuccessfully to contact her before setting up a meeting with her boyfriend in Salmabad to ‘talk things out’.
“He came with his friend in a black GMC,” the 42-year-old Bangladeshi victim earlier testified. “He told me to come with them and I said ‘no’, so they came out of the car, assaulted me and forced me into their vehicle. I tried to resist, and my co-worker tried to pull me away, but they beat him up too.
“Once they managed to get me in their car, they drove off. The first defendant asked for my phone, but I said no, so he hit me in the face and threatened me with a knife.
“I was forced to give him my mobile.”
He used it to message his former girlfriend, hoodwinking her into sending her location.
“The car headed to Hoora, and when we got there, the defendant asked me to call her and ask her to come out,” the male victim told the court.
He added that when the 34-year-old woman laid eyes on her ex-boyfriend, she tried to run, but he caught up to her and forced her into the car.
The Bangladeshi was bundled out of the vehicle.
The Russian woman said that her alleged kidnapper hit her and she lost consciousness.
“When I woke up, I realised I was in his house. I couldn’t run away since he was right next to me,” she said. “I was worried he’d assault me again, so I stayed put. Eventually, the police arrived and arrested him.”
In Public Prosecution hearings, the defendant admitted to all charges, stating that he and his accomplice hit the two Bangladeshi men and that he physically assaulted the woman.
“I met with the first witness (Bangladeshi) because he has ties to my friend (Russian), the second witness, with whom I was in a romantic relationship for two years,” he said.
“She disappeared a month ago and I couldn’t reach her – I met him so I’d be able to get to her.
“I beat her up hard. I was in a state of rage, I felt provoked ... I don’t know why I did what I did,” he confessed. “All I know is that I did it due to my intense love for her.”
The court set October 13 as the date a verdict will be issued in the case.
