One person was killed and 11 others injured after King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was targeted again yesterday afternoon in a new terrorist attack, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said.
The relevant authorities are assessing the damage and verifying the safety of the airport’s facilities, it added.
The Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen announced earlier yesterday that a passenger terminal at the airport had been targeted by an unidentified projectile, sparking a fire there.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al Malki said on X that the relevant authorities rushed to the scene to deal with the consequences of the attack.
In a related development, the coalition announced that its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile in the vicinity of King Khalid International Airport.
Several Arab and foreign countries yesterday condemned the terrorist attack carried out by the Houthi militia on the airport the previous day, which left 12 people dead and 309 injured.
Major General Turki Al Malki said the Houthi militia’s attack on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport, which resulted in deaths and injuries among passengers and airport staff members, ‘constitutes a fully fledged war crime’ under the international humanitarian law.
King Fahad International Airport in Dammam was also targeted in an attack in the evening, the civil aviation authority said, as the coalition separately announced the interception of a drone in the Eastern Province.
The Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia said that an Indian national injured in the attack at Riyadh’s international airport had died. “We are in touch with the family and will provide all support for ensuring the early repatriation of mortal remains,” the embassy said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, a five-day conference of international energy organisation WPC Energy opened as planned at a convention centre about 10km from the
Riyadh airport, the Saudi energy ministry said.
A ministerial meeting of the International Energy Forum also went ahead on Sunday, with its plenary session to be held behind closed doors, according to a media advisory from the ministry.
