Parliamentary immunity has been lifted for MP Abdulla Al Rumaihi during Parliament's five-month recess, allowing the possibility of criminal proceedings to be pursued against him.
The decision was approved by Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam during the legislative recess, in accordance with constitutional provisions and Parliament's internal regulations governing parliamentary immunity.
The case No 2026/43227 is registered as a misdemeanour case with the Public Prosecution.
Parliament's amended agenda for tomorrow’s session includes notifying MPs of the approval.
Under Article 89(c) of the Constitution and Article 185 of the Parliament’s internal regulations, permission from the Speaker is required to initiate criminal proceedings against an MP outside the parliamentary session.
If the House or its Speaker fails to issue a decision on a request for permission within one month of receiving it, permission is deemed to have been granted under the applicable provisions.
The lifting of immunity does not constitute a finding of guilt or a conviction.
It removes the applicable parliamentary procedural protection, allowing the relevant legal proceedings to take their course in accordance with the law.
Mr Al Romaihi is the current foreign affairs, defence and national security committee vice-chairman until new elections are held tomorrow.
He lost the race for the vacated first deputy speaker to MP Jalila Al Sayed on Sunday.
