The new Disney-Pixar movie Lightyear is unlikely to be screened in Bahrain in a stand-off over censoring of short clips for cultural reasons.
The movie, which is an origin’s spin-off of the much-loved Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, was scheduled to hit local screens in advance of the US opening at the weekend.
“The movie has not arrived for censorship review at the Information Affairs Ministry and distributors have been informed previously to edit homosexual scenes but they refused,” said an official source.
“It is the third Disney movie in less than a year to be banned from screening following Eternals in November and Dr Strange 2 last month. Both were approved with minor edits but Disney refused to accept the cuts.”
For decades, Hollywood has been accused of having a ‘gay mafia’ controlling its interests.
After making comments in 2011 that some said were anti-gay, American radio personality, comedian, actor and podcaster Adam Carolla came under fire from a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media watchdog groups.
The star has continued his diatribe about ‘political correctness’ in interviews, where he also claimed that the gay mafia was a reality. “If you can’t work with gay people, you’re gonna have a difficult time in Hollywood,” he said.
His original comments included commentary on gay marriage stemming from a children’s series. His subsequent apology and claim that he was ‘a comedian, not a politician’ left watchdog groups wanting more, The Hollywood Reporter later claimed.
His talk show, distributed as a podcast, set the record as the ‘most downloaded podcast’ as judged by Guinness World Records.
