A man was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday for supporting and glorifying unlawful terrorist attacks carried out against the kingdom by Iran.
The conviction followed posts published by the defendant on social media supporting the attacks.
The High Criminal Court also imposed a fine of BD2,000 and ordered the confiscation of his electronic devices.
According to the Public Prosecution, the case was initiated after it received a report about the defendant from the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security’s Cybercrime Directorate.
Authorities detected a social media account containing images, videos and comments expressing support for Iranian attacks targeting Bahrain. An investigation led to the identification of the person operating the account.
The defendant was questioned, witness statements were heard, and technical experts were appointed to examine the seized items.
The findings confirmed that he had committed the offences with which he was charged.
The Public Prosecution ordered that the defendant be referred to the High Criminal Court.
The court heard the case over several sessions, during which all legal safeguards were afforded to the defendant, foremost among them his right to a defence, before ultimately issuing the verdict.
The Public Prosecution emphasised, in a statement, that freedom of opinion and expression is guaranteed within the framework of the law.
However, it said the use of social media must comply with legal requirements and must not involve anything that could compromise the security or stability of the country.
It further affirmed that publishing or circulating material that supports, glorifies or justifies terrorist acts constitutes a criminal offence punishable by law, given the threat such conduct poses to national security and social peace.
The Public Prosecution vowed to continue taking legal action against anyone who violates the law.
It called on citizens and residents to act responsibly when using social media in a manner that contributes to protecting the security and stability of the nation.
