Kind-hearted citizens and residents are continuing to rally round to support a Bahraini man who needs BD9,000 to cover the cost of a kidney transplant surgery outside the country.
Samir Ahmed Ebrahim Hassan, a 60-year-old from Sanad who suffers from chronic kidney disease (CKD), has not been able to find a donor in Bahrain and doctors have hence advised him to travel abroad.
The treatment is expected to cost him BD35,000 in total and Sanad Charitable and Social Association has launched a fundraising campaign – Save Samir – to help Mr Hassan.
CKD is a condition characterised by a gradual loss of kidney function, which calls for dialysis – a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood. It often involves diverting blood to a machine to be cleaned.
Sanad Charity social committee head Mohammed Jaffar Ali told the GDN that the campaign was launched to raise BD45,000 to pay for the medical bills of four patients, including Mr Hassan.
“We collected BD30,000 in a week, which was an overwhelming support,” Mr Ali said.
From the amount collected, BD10,000 was used for the three male patients, all of whom needed surgical procedures for ailments including spine injury.
Funds continue trickling in and as of yesterday, according to the society website, it still needs BD9,000 more to send Mr Hassan abroad for treatment.
Kidney transplants are performed at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC). The GDN reported in April that more than 20 transplants are scheduled for this year, of which six have been successfully completed.
SMC consultant nephrologist Dr Ali Al Aradi said the remaining procedures would be done in December.
This follows restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which prevented transplants during the previous two years.
According to Sanad Charitable and Social Association records, Mr Hassan has been a kidney failure patient since 2019. He has been receiving four-hour sessions of dialysis at SMC three times a week while he waits for a donor.
“We received his reports from SMC stating the non-availability of donors within the kingdom and therefore doctors have recommended an overseas transplant,” said Mr Ali.
“Samir cannot afford the expenses and he approached our association. We analysed his case as per our procedures and found him eligible.
“Samir will travel as soon as funds and the right donor are available.
“We urge support from donors for this valid cause,” Mr Ali added.
Mr Hassan, who is originally from Sanabis, has been a Sanad resident for 20 years.
