A serial offender who was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting policemen and damaging medical equipment at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) has lodged an appeal against the verdict.
After being released from prison on a Royal Pardon in April 2024, he was arrested in November 2025 on suspicion of an unrelated crime, the court heard.
While the 32-year-old was in custody, he experienced a medical emergency and was taken to hospital, escorted by four policemen, where the incident took place.
When a nurse told him that he was to be discharged from the hospital, and returned to the detention centre, he had an intense reaction, read the initial High Criminal Court verdict.
“He was enraged and began screaming in the ward, causing a ruckus. He lifted the medical bed he had been using and caused damage to the hospital.”
The policemen tried to calm him down, but he reportedly refused to comply, continuing his rampage.
The policemen informed their supervisor of the situation, and received instructions to restrain the defendant ‘to prevent the situation from worsening’.
As a response to the arrest, the convict reportedly insulted the policemen, hurling vulgarities and insults at them, including ‘if you were a man, you’d unlock my handcuffs’.
The court heard that he ‘violently’ pulled a policeman by his shirt, causing a button to pop off, then kicked him multiple times in the chest and spat on his face, while cursing at him.
He was eventually pinned down and handed over to the following police shift. Meanwhile, the officers who were assaulted and insulted filed a complaint with the Hoora Police Station.
According to the court, the defendant previously received a three-year prison sentence, and began serving it in October 2022. He was released a year and a half later after being granted a pardon by His Majesty King Hamad on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr.
“The punishment he received under the law did not discourage him; he returned to custody in November 2025,” judges stated in the verdict.
“From there, he was taken to SMC to receive treatment, and was admitted under police observation.”
In July, the High Criminal Court found him guilty of assaulting a member of the security forces ‘in an attempt to obstruct him from performing his duties’, but the assault did not result in a long-term injury.
He was also found guilty of publicly insulting the officer in a way that ‘harmed his reputation and social standing’, making claims against him that ‘had no basis in reality’.
He was tried in court as a previously convicted individual, having in the past been found guilty on similar charges.
He lodged an appeal against his conviction with the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court.
The court set August 31 for a new lawyer to be appointed to represent him.
