BAHRAINI women have once again reached a historic milestone with eight candidates being elected for Parliament in Bahrain’s 2022 National Elections breaking previous records.
Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and Supreme Council for Women (SCW) president, yesterday expressed her great pride at the outcome.
She welcomed the electoral triumph of the eight women to Parliament and three to municipal councils.
HRH Princess Sabeeka expressed happiness with the performance of the women who took the initiative to run in the elections and contribute to the national democratic exercise.
“It is a patriotic and proud moment in appreciation of these successive achievements of women in Bahrain, and we extend our sincere congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad for the continuous support to ensure their equal participation in the nation building process and preserve the advanced status of Bahraini women in national affairs,” she said.
HRH Princess Sabeeka appreciated the attention accorded by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to Bahraini women that enhanced their advancement as a national priority.
She sent cables of congratulations to the women who won the elections and wished them success.
Eman Showaiter, a member of the Progressive Tribune Society, secured a seat representing Capital Governorate Constituency 10 (West Eker, Sanad and South Isa Town) with the highest number of votes (4,310) among women in the second round of voting.
Seventy-four women were vying for Parliament seats, with 15 ending up facing a run-off on Saturday.
“I’m grateful for the trust of the 4,310 voters – representing 73.6 per cent of the electorate – and I hope to gain the confidence of the rest of the honourable people of my constituency through my parliamentary work that will benefit the people without exception,” Ms Showaiter posted on social media yesterday.
According to the final statistics following the run-off elections, in the Northern Governorate Hanan Fardan secured 4,217 votes from Constituency 12 (Demistan, Malkiya, Karzakan and Al Louzy); Basma Mubarak 3,349 (Constituency 11, covering Hamad Town – south – and Dar Kulaib); and Maryam Al Saegh 2,063 (Constituency Five, covering Al Qadam, Al Hajar, Abu Saiba, Shakhoora, Saar, south Janabiya and Maqaba).
Sitting MP Zainab Abdulamir – who represents Capital Governorate Constituency Seven (Jid Ali, Jurdab and Al Nasfa) was elected in the first round against 15 other candidates after securing 3,202 votes while Jaleela Sayed (Capital Governorate Constituency Eight covering Nabih Saleh and north Sitra) secured 1,049 votes in the second round.
With 2,476 votes, Dr Mariam Al Dhaen secured a seat in Southern Governorate Constituency Two (Isa Town East) while in Constituency 10 Lulwa Al Romaihi secured 2,017 votes representing Al Qarain, Umm Jadar Al Saman, Jasaira, Rumaitha, Shabak, Hawar Islands, Durrat Al Bahrain and Khalifa Town.
Meanwhile, three women were chosen as municipal councillors with two elected in the Northern Governorate (Zaina Jassim and Zainab Al Durazi – both sitting councillors re-elected) and new-comer Dalal Al Megahwi in Muharraq’s Governorate.
