A SPECIAL committee to organise joint action during the rainy season as well as identify specific waterlogging areas was among the key recommendations of a key meeting.
As temperatures are predicted to drop to as low as 13C until Monday and chances of scattered rains forecast across Bahrain, the Northern Municipal Council also recommended launching a public awareness campaign in preparation.
A joint meeting was held yesterday at the Northern Municipal Council and was attended by Works Ministry representatives, personnel from the Civil Defence, General Traffic Directorate and the Northern Governorate Police Directorate as well as public health officials.
The meeting, which was also attended by officials from the Northern Municipality and the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), was held to co-ordinate a plan ahead of the rainy season.
Once drafted these recommendations will be referred to Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak for review and action.
“Among the key recommendations reached was the formation of a joint committee tasked with organising the mechanism of the action plan during the rainy season through active collaboration between all authorities concerned,” said the Northern Municipal Council in an official statement.
“It is also important to identify and list the waterlogging points as well rainwater drainage sites in co-ordination with the representatives of the concerned government department.
“Among the recommendations is organising the distribution of municipal inspectors and ministry engineers while providing the councillors with details of the co-ordination process schedule.”
The council also highlighted the importance of providing open lines of communication to tackle emergency cases of flooding while also raising awareness about the importance of ensuring individuals refrain from opening the wastewater channels.
Developing technical specifications to protect the covers of wastewater channels was also deemed critical to ensure the mechanism is controlled.
According to the weather forecast until Monday, temperatures are expected to drop to a minimum of 13C with a chance of scattered rain today, and tomorrow as well as on Monday.
The GDN reported yesterday that tankers were deployed to clear waterlogged neighbourhoods in the Capital Governorate.
The move by the Capital Trustees Authority came after several parts of the country experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.
Municipal teams were also present on site to help in the drainage process.
People in affected areas have been urged to contact the general hotline 80008188.
A team of men and equipment are on standby to tackle any issues caused by heavy rains in Bahrain as more than 200 workers were assigned by the Works Ministry and Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry to deal with any emergency or waterlogging.
Around 100 pumps and power generators were also distributed across the four governorates to ensure any deluge doesn’t become a dampening disaster.
