STUDENTS from the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) volunteered to serve Haj pilgrims this year.
Nine students were among 5,466 health volunteers in Mecca, participating in the Haj Voluntary Health Programme affiliated with the Saudi Health Ministry and the Haj and Umrah Ministry.
The team provided first aid to pilgrims and treated emergency cases until ambulances arrived. The cases handled included cardiac arrest, head and foot injuries, hypoglycaemia, high and low blood pressure.
“The experience is exceptional and rich by all standards. We learned how to organise crowds, deal with a large number of infections, speed up work and sort out diseases,” said student Mazen Al Zahrani.
Other student volunteers included Abdulhameed Al Awaji, Saad Al Saleh, Ruba Al Hazmi, Renad Al Hazmi, Youmna Al Ahmad, La’alea Hafez, Turki Al Yami and Abdul Al Anzi.
An estimated 1.8 million pilgrims performed Haj this year. According to the Bahrain Haj Mission, Bahraini pilgrims have returned after completing the rituals.
