CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Matevz Govekar placed sixth in the young riders ranking yesterday after the opening stage of the 46th Vuelta a Burgos, which got underway in Spain.
The Slovenian finished the 168-kilometre leg, which started in Vilviestre del Pinar and ended in Burgos, in 11th overall amongst the leaders’ group, which was spearheaded by stage winner Pavel Bittner of the Czech Republic. Govekar’s classification earned him his place in the top 10 amongst the best youngsters, who are battling for the race’s white jersey. He is 10 seconds behind Bittner in those rankings.
Amongst Bahrain Victorious’ other riders, Torstein Traen of Norway came 26th, Italians Antonio Tiberi and Damiano Caruso were 37th and 41st, respectively, and Croatian Fran Miholjevic was 48th. German Jasha Sutterlin was 118th and Pole Kamil Gradek was 128th to round out the team’s members in stage one.
The Vuelta a Burgos continues today with the 161km second stage, starting from Valle de Mena and ending in Complejo Karstico Ojo Guarena.
