HORSERACING – THE Muharraq Equestrian Academy will host a popular horse riders’ show on November 7 at 3pm.
The event was originally scheduled to be held yesterday at the Bahrain Fort site, but had to be relocated following a directive from the Capital Governorate to cordon off the area due to hazardous mud holes, despite recent repair work.
The decision marks the first time in more than 30 years that the traditional opening of the popular equestrian event has been moved from its original location.
Despite the unexpected change, organisers and riders say the spirit of the season remains strong.
“Nothing can dampen our enthusiasm,” said Khalil Al Fardan, long-time leader of Bahrain’s riders’ network. “Yes, we’ve had to move, but the important thing is that the season is starting. The riders are excited, the horses are ready, and the show will go on.”
Mr Al Fardan emphasised that the brief delay and change of venue have only strengthened the team’s determination.
“We’ve turned this challenge into motivation,” he said. “It’s given us a chance to refine our performances and bring even more colour and energy to the opening day.”
This year’s event will feature an expanded programme highlighting young and female riders, with cowboy-themed competitions, choreography challenges and costume contests for children, teenagers, and young adults.
“We’re focusing on the next generation,” Mr Al Fardan added. “Their creativity and energy keep this tradition alive. Every year, we grow stronger together.”
Riders who stand out during the season will be invited to perform at major national events, including Mara’ee later this month and the National Day celebrations in December. Spectators can also look forward to cavalry-style shows inspired by Ottoman, British, French, Arabian, and “Lawrence of Arabia” traditions, along with Bahraini wedding re-enactments and folklore performances celebrating the kingdom’s rich equestrian heritage.
“This season is a celebration of who we are and how far we’ve come,” said Al Fardan.
“Different venue, same passion – and an unforgettable experience for everyone.”
