A major revamp of a park in Isa Town, which fell into disrepair during the Covid-19 pandemic, is now 90 per cent complete, with the upgraded facility set to offer residents a greener and more family-friendly public space.
This was revealed during a recent inspection visit by top officials, led by Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak, to the Isa Town Park in Block 809.
Southern Municipal Council chairman Abdulla Abdullatif, council director-general Isa Al Buainain and second constituency representative Mubarak Faraj were present.
During the tour, Mr Al Mubarak affirmed that the ministry would continue implementing its plans to develop parks and public facilities, expand afforestation projects and increase green spaces.
This comes as part of efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and provide integrated facilities that meet the needs of citizens and residents across the kingdom.
“Around 90pc of the park’s development work has been completed,” said Mr Al Mubarak.
“It has a total area of 7,551sqm, with the project involving the rehabilitation and development of its facilities.
“This includes the creation of a 430sqm children’s play area, and a 1,890-metre-long walkway.
“The project also includes increasing green spaces and intensifying planting across an area of 4,038sqm, planting 210 trees, and providing 40 car parking spaces.
“Construction works are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.”
Mr Al Mubarak explained that the development of Isa Town Park represents an important addition to the network of service and recreational facilities in the Southern Governorate.
It forms part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance public facilities and provide a suitable environment for people of all age groups, in line with the needs and aspirations of local residents.
He affirmed the ministry’s continued implementation of service and development initiatives and projects that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
“I would like to commend the constructive co-operation with the Southern Municipal Council and its commitment to monitoring residents’ needs,” said Mr Al Mubarak.
“They are working to address them through the implementation of development projects across different areas of the governorate.”
Meanwhile, Mr Abdullatif expressed his appreciation to the ministry for its efforts in implementing service and development projects.
He praised the park’s design, which contributes to expanding green spaces, integrating them with the surrounding area and facilitating visitors’ access to them.
He also highlighted the provision of public car parking around the park, which will help improve traffic flow and provide greater convenience for visitors and local residents.
Mr Faraj stressed the importance of developing the park and commended the efforts of the ministry and its ongoing endeavours to implement service and development projects that benefit citizens and residents and contribute to the development of residential areas.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, public facilities in Isa Town, including parks, traditional markets and surrounding recreational areas experienced temporary closures and restrictions.
Like most public spaces, Isa Town Park faced standard precautionary closures and severe capacity limits during peak infection waves to prioritise public health.
Once the National Taskforce to Combat Covid-19 began relaxing restrictions across the kingdom, the government pivoted from pandemic containment to heavy structural reinvestment.
Instead of just reopening the park in its legacy state, they initiated this complete renovation to give the local community an upgraded, eco-friendly urban oasis.
