Married couples in Türkiye may need to exercise greater caution on social media after a landmark ruling by the Turkish Court of Cassation that “liking” other people’s photos can constitute grounds for divorce.
The court, while hearing a divorce case, ruled that likes placed on photos posted by members of the opposite sex could be considered a breach of trust and therefore a legitimate reason for ending a marriage.
The case involved a couple from Kayseri. The wife accused her husband of financial abuse, humiliation, and frequently liking photos of other women, arguing that his behaviour disrespected their marriage, eroded trust, and threatened the emotional stability of their relationship.
The husband, in turn, claimed that his wife was excessively jealous and verbally insulting.
Ultimately, the court sided with the wife, granting her temporary support, alimony, and compensation.
