The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations has transmitted identical letters to the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council regarding continued Iranian attacks against the Kingdom of Bahrain. The letter is the fifth official communication submitted by Bahrain in response to the ongoing escalation.
The communication outlines the Kingdom’s deep concern over the blatant Iranian aggression against Bahrain’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Mission warned that these attacks represent a serious escalation that threatens regional stability and international peace and security, despite calls by the international community to halt such actions following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2817.
The letter provides updated information and statistics on the attacks that the Kingdom of Bahrain has been facing since 28 February 2026. According to the communication, the aggression has targeted sites, infrastructure, critical facilities, and residential areas across the Kingdom. The Mission noted that official reports indicate the attacks form part of successive waves of missile and drone strikes affecting several countries in the region, contributing to an unprecedented escalation that threatens regional security and stability.
Since the beginning of the attacks, Bahrain Defence Force air defence systems have continued to respond to incoming threats. The General Command of the Bahrain Defence Force announced that its air defence systems have successfully intercepted and destroyed more than 120 ballistic missiles and over 190 hostile drones targeting the Kingdom’s airspace, territorial waters, and territory. These efforts have helped mitigate potential damage and protect civilian lives as well as vital infrastructure.
The letter also addressed the continued targeting of civilian facilities and infrastructure. In particular, it referenced an attack on 12 March 2026 targeting fuel tanks at a facility in Muharraq Governorate. Bahraini authorities have taken the necessary measures to contain the resulting fire and assess environmental and material damage. The Mission stated that such incidents highlight the indiscriminate nature of the attacks, which have struck facilities essential to the national economy and energy security.
The communication further recalled previous incidents, including repeated attacks targeting a facility in the Ma’ameer area and the strike on Sitra on 9 March 2026, which injured 32 Bahraini civilians, including children. It also referenced an attack on a residential building in the capital, Manama, on 10 March 2026, which resulted in the death of one Bahraini citizen and injuries to eight others. According to the Mission, these incidents demonstrate the unlawful and indiscriminate nature of the attacks and their direct threat to civilian populations.
The statement reaffirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s inherent right to self-defence in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, noting that any response will be proportionate to the nature and scale of the attacks and conducted within the framework of international law and in coordination with allies and partners. It also reiterated Bahrain’s continued commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and its determination to safeguard its security, territory, citizens, and residents.
In this context, the letter referred to Security Council Resolution 2817, adopted on 11 March 2026, which condemns in the strongest terms the attacks launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the territories of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The resolution affirms the right of these states to individual and collective self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter and reflects broad international support, having been co-sponsored by 136 countries.
The statement concluded with Bahrain renewing its call for the international community to strongly condemn the continued missile and drone attacks, which endanger civilian lives and threaten regional and international peace and security. The Kingdom emphasised that competent authorities would assess all damages and losses resulting from these attacks and affirmed that it will continue to keep the United Nations informed of any further developments.
