The six signs and indicators that you are under the influence of a heat dome:
1. Completely Clear Sky
The temperature difference between day and night is less than 10C. The sky remains completely clear and free of any clouds for two consecutive days or more.
2. Temperature Convergence
Unusual and Extreme Heat: The weather becomes intensely hot and completely different from what is normal for this time of year (eg, daytime reaching 42C and night remaining as high as 36C).
3. Sneaky Heat of Solid Objects
Warmth of Poles and Clothes: You will notice distinct, noticeable heat retained in clothing, street poles and solid objects even during the night.
4. Rising Thermal Stress
The thermal stress index rises due to trapped humidity and stagnant wind, causing significant physical discomfort.
5. Trapping of Pollutants and Odours
Temperature Inversion: High atmospheric pressure traps gases, odours, and wastewater treatment fumes near ground level, worsening air quality.
6. Heat Exhaustion and Thermal Stagnation
Wind Silence: Air currents become extremely weak or completely absent, forming a barrier against the jet stream in upper atmospheric layers.
