As I say goodbye to Bahrain, I know it isn’t truly a goodbye. How can it be? Bahrain isn’t just a place you live, it becomes a place where you discover yourself. That is exactly what it has been for me.
More than 15 years ago, I arrived here as a young mother after leaving my architecture consultancy in Pakistan, wondering what my next chapter would hold. I never imagined that this tiny but gracious island would become so much more than a place to live. Looking back today, I can say that my Bahrain chapter has been one of the most meaningful of my life.
When I left my profession behind, I thought I was closing an important chapter. Instead, Bahrain quietly opened another. It gave me opportunities to serve, to grow and to discover a deeper sense of purpose. I have always believed that when we feel safe and secure, we have a responsibility to look beyond ourselves and ask, ‘How can I give back?’ Bahrain gave me that sense of belonging and, with it, countless opportunities to make a difference.
The Pakistani Women’s Association (PWA) has been at the heart of this journey. A registered charity since 1998, the PWA is something every Pakistani in Bahrain can be proud of. Over the years, I have had the privilege of leading remarkable volunteers, connecting with community members, collaborating with our Embassy of Pakistan, and partner organisations to serve those in need.
Together, we have organised refreshment, meal and hygiene drives, awareness campaigns, youth initiatives and community outreach programmes. Most importantly, through our Education Scholarship Fund, we continue to support the education of around 30 to 35 students every month, a legacy of hope that has touched lives for decades.
One initiative especially close to my heart is the Youth Ambassador Programme, which we launched during my tenure as president. Watching young people discover the joy of serving others has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my journey. These years have taught me that leadership is not about titles, it is about creating opportunities for others to grow and contribute.
Beyond PWA, Bahrain opened many other doors for me. I was fortunate to be part of projects like Shamsaha’s advocacy efforts, to collaborate with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and to serve on the advisory parent board at the British School of Bahrain. Every one of these experiences reinforced the same belief: if your intention is genuine, Bahrain gives you the space to make a meaningful impact.
To every woman living here, especially Pakistani women, my message is simple: don’t just admire the idea of giving back, experience it. The greatest reward is rarely what we receive; it is who we become through serving others. If you feel safe, secure and want to make a difference, this community will embrace you and provide countless opportunities to do so.
As I leave, I carry with me unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships and immense gratitude. I am also incredibly proud to have co-founded Qyssa with Saba Saleem, a platform initiated with the same power of intent, to celebrate inspiring stories and amplify voices that deserve to be heard. Qyssa also hosted a radio show for more than one and a half years to highlight Pakistan.
The journey doesn’t end here. My connection with Bahrain will continue through Qyssa, through future initiatives, and through my commitment to serving the community wherever I am. Service is never limited by geography; it is guided by intent.
Thank you, Bahrain, for believing in me, shaping me, and giving me a place where I not only found a home, but also found myself.
