Two men are starting a three-year prison sentence for a brutal attack on a man who had to be placed on a hospital ventilator and undergo life-saving surgery.
They were involved in a fistfight that left one victim with skull fractures, internal bleeding in the brain and a broken nose, as well as bruises on his neck from an attempted strangulation.
The brutes were placed behind bars after court verdicts were upheld twice following appeals against their sentences.
In the initial Lower Criminal Court trial, the men were each granted BD500 bail and the suspension of their jail sentences while they contested the rulings through the appeals court procedure.
Their nationalities and ages were not outlined in the Cessation Court verdict.
They appealed to the High Criminal Appeals Court and the Cessation Court but judges sitting in both jurisdictions rejected their bids to overturn the rulings.
On the day of the incident, the courts heard that the two defendants assaulted two people – one who only sustained minor injuries, and the other who sustained severe injuries with long-term consequences.
The battered victim suffered a haematoma in the right frontal lobe, as well as in the area between the brain’s outer membrane and the skull.
According to a medical report, he also suffered facial bruising, as well as abrasions on his eyelids and knee.
“Injuries suggest that someone pressed on his neck with their hand while choking him,” the report stated.
“These bruises were consistent with the other injuries – they appear to have occurred in the same time frame.”
According to court documents, the man required urgent surgery to remove the haematoma.
Besides the surgical intervention, he had to be carefully observed by medical staff, who monitored the bleeding in his brain through CT scans until his condition stabilised.
