An Indian-origin woman and her Nepali-American friend were killed after being struck by an oncoming train at a subway station in New York on Sunday.
Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul, both 24-year-old New Jersey residents, were pronounced dead at the scene following the incident at 3.14am.
Transport authority reports indicated that one of the individuals appeared to have fallen onto the tracks, prompting the other to jump down to assist, according to the New York Daily News.
Moments before the impact, Chitre was allegedly seen laughing and pulling Kaul towards her on the tracks.
The train operator told supervisors she saw a man and a woman sitting on the tracks before she was unable to stop in time.
Social media footage showed the pair sitting on the tracks shortly before the train approached.
Police confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths is ongoing.
