Renewed warnings over the risk children face online have been issued as police arrested three people for allegedly luring and exploiting young girls on social media platforms.
The children were aged between 14 and 16, the Public Prosecution stated.
Three separate reports were lodged at the Child Protection in Cyberspace Unit at the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security about teenagers experiencing sexual exploitation online.
Investigations identified the suspects and arrested them. Under questioning, they admitted to contacting the girls online, chatting with them and then exchanging images.
The Public Prosecution ordered the accused be remanded for seven days as investigations continued, and the mobile devices they used to commit the alleged crimes were confiscated for inspection.
The children were also interviewed by the prosecution.
Warning from authorities was renewed over the dangers children can face while using social media, particularly when approached by strangers using deception or enticement.
The Child Protection Unit urged parents to keep a close eye on their children’s screen activity and speak to them about the risks of communicating with unknown people online.
Parents were also advised to ensure children do not share photographs, personal details or other private information with strangers.
The unit stressed the importance of reporting any suspicious communication or attempts to lure children at the earliest opportunity.
The ministry also urged families to remain vigilant as children’s growing use of social media can expose them to individuals seeking to exploit their trust through deceptive online interactions.
