Indian pilot Smit Machchhar is being hailed a hero for helping to save passengers in the flydubai flight incident on Wednesday.
He was severely wounded in a cockpit altercation, as reported in today’s GDN.
The aircraft subsequently executed a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Machchhar early on Thursday, describing him as a hero who averted a major tragedy.
"In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others," Modi said.
"His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy," the Indian Prime Minister added.
Indian authorities confirmed Machchhar is receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk while diplomatic officials remain in contact with his family and Saudi officials to provide full support.
