Ukrainian influencer Vadym Oleynik has been referred to Oman’s Public Prosecution for legal action after a video showed him riding an endangered sea turtle at a nature reserve.
Nizar bin Salim Al Fannah Al Araimi, Director of the Environment Department in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, confirmed the man entered the Ras Al Jinz reserve at night without a permit on Friday, September 25.
Oleynik filmed himself alongside his fiancée riding the endangered green sea turtle and mishandling hatchlings, triggering widespread outrage online.
Environment Authority officials summoned and questioned the influencer following the viral distribution of the video.
He was issued two citations for unauthorised site entry and wildlife mistreatment prior to his referral to prosecutors.
Oleynik subsequently posted a social media apology, claiming he was unaware of local conservation laws and did not intend to harm the animal.
Al Araimi stated that while the influencer expressed regret, an apology does not resolve the matter due to the serious violation of wildlife protection laws.
