Manama: Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Al Zayani has told bankers that it is unfair to charge consumers any additional amount on the prices of goods and services purchased and the banks that provide automatic payment devices must contractually agree with companies not to load consumers with additional charges.
The directive was given by the minister to chief executives of banks during a meeting in the presence of Central Bank of Bahrain representatives.
Following the meeting, it was agreed that the ministry will take necessary action against such practices which are prohibited.
Companies that violate the prohibition will be fined up to BD10,000 as per provisions of the Consumer Protection Law.
The ministry will also intensify consumers’ awareness campaigns, advising consumers of the need to inform the Consumer Protection Department in the event of the merchants insisting on extra charges.
