Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa yesterday inaugurated the Bahrain Mangroves initiative by planting several mangroves at the Royal Bahraini Air Force.
He highlighted the kingdom’s commitment to tackling climate change and its target to quadruple mangroves coverage by 2035.
Shaikh Mohammed underscored that community partnership is essential to the success of the afforestation plan and Bahrain’s environmental goals and broader aspirations.
This partnership also supports the National Action Plan’s initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, in line with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
Shaikh Mohammed affirmed the kingdom’s commitment to implementing initiatives and plans that preserve the environment, ensure resource sustainability, and create a better future for all.
He noted the tireless efforts of the Supreme Council for the Environment, led by the King’s Personal Representative Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry, and all authorities concerned in combating climate challenges, preserving the environment and enhancing biodiversity.
Shaikh Mohammed commended the Bahrain Defence Force’s support to all initiatives that aim to achieve security and biodiversity.
He stressed the importance of raising awareness about environmental preservation, particularly through expanding Bahrain’s green spaces and increasing mangrove plantations.
He noted that mangroves are crucial in mitigating climate change and maintaining ecological balance.
Bahrain has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2035 and reach net zero in 2060. This aligns with several key national initiatives, including the National Action Plan’s ‘Blueprint Bahrain’ to achieve carbon neutrality, the kingdom’s afforestation plan, which aims to increase the number of trees to 3.6 million by 2035, and National Tree Week, held annually on the third week of October.
To amplify awareness, the social media account @BahrainMangroves was launched to provide insights into the importance of mangroves, planting techniques, and general updates on the kingdom’s environmental efforts.
