Indian Motorcycle set a new record with its race-spec Challenger, which achieved 316.35 km/h (196.576 mph) at Bonneville Salt Flats in the US.
Driven by pro-racer Tyler O’Hara, the modified bagger bike broke a 53-year-old record in the 2000cc APS-AG category. The previous record was set in 1972 by a Triumph motorcycle at 273.311 km/h (169.828 mph).
Indian Motorcycle also broke its own 58-year-old record set by Burt Munro in 1967, who raced a Scout built in a shed to a whopping 307.3 km/h.
Munro’s feat was immortalised in the 2005 film ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ starring Anthony Hopkins.
Indian built the record-breaking Bonneville bike on a stock Challenger race bike, in collaboration with S&S Cycle. It uses the Indian's 112 ci PowerPlus V-twin motor, which produces 126 horsepower in stock condition, fitted with larger throttle bodies, ported cylinder heads, two-into-two exhaust, and race camshafts.
