Two individuals, whose ages and nationalities were not disclosed, have been placed in provisional detention for allegedly broadcasting content on social media that could undermine public order and incite panic among citizens and residents.
The Public Prosecution received a report on the men from the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security.
According to authorities, the pair conducted a live broadcast on social media and filmed a fire that broke out in a building after it was struck by shelling.
The footage was then allegedly disseminated widely ‘in a manner that could terrify citizens and residents and harm public order,’ according to the prosecution.
Upon receiving the reports, the Public Prosecution launched an investigation, reviewed the published footage, and questioned the two defendants.
The duo allegedly admitted that they had filmed the incident using the live broadcast feature of a social media application and posted it on their accounts with the intention of increasing views and engagement.
Authorities stressed that publishing such footage under the current circumstances could terrify citizens and residents, spread panic, and ultimately disrupt social peace.
They urged members of the public to avoid engaging in similar practices that could result in criminal liability and to adhere strictly to the guidance and instructions issued by the competent authorities regarding the handling of ongoing events.
The prosecution added that it will not hesitate to take deterrent legal measures against anyone who deliberately exploits social media platforms to publish content that undermines public security or spreads fear among members of society.
It affirmed that while individuals are free to use social media and exercise their right to express opinions, such freedoms must be exercised with respect for public order and the overarching need to safeguard the nation’s security and stability.
The Interior Ministry said yesterday that its Anti-Cybercrime Directorate arrested a 35-year-old man for misusing social media as he filmed and posted videos related to the Iranian aggression targeting multiple locations on his account.
He was referred to the Public Prosecution.
