Ambassador Shaikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the 50th session of the G77 and China Foreign Ministers’ meeting, chaired by the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
In Bahrain’s statement, Ambassador Shaikh Abdullah expressed appreciation to Uruguay for its efforts in leading the group, stressing the importance of maintaining the unity and solidarity of the G77 and China to strengthen its ability to address the economic, development and security challenges facing developing countries.
He emphasised that development aspirations can only be achieved in a stable regional and international environment, highlighting the exceptional challenges faced by countries in the region following repeated Iranian attacks, which resulted in loss of life, damage to civilian and critical infrastructure, and disruptions to supply chains, trade and energy, affecting progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
He highlighted Bahrain’s resilience and institutional readiness in responding to these challenges, including the rapid restoration of essential services, as well as the importance of economic diversification and crisis management in strengthening national resilience. He noted that these efforts were reflected in Bahrain’s third Voluntary National Review of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, presented last July.
He reiterated Bahrain’s condemnation of the Iranian attacks, including those against GCC states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817. He affirmed Bahrain’s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter and to pursue legal and diplomatic avenues to hold Iran accountable and seek compensation for the damage and losses caused by its attacks.
Concluding his statement, Ambassador Shaikh Abdullah stressed that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires not only national efforts but also a stable regional and international environment and an international system that supports developing countries in addressing crises. He underscored the G77 and China’s role in uniting the voices of its members and advancing their development priorities, reaffirming Bahrain’s commitment to working with the group to strengthen resilience, achieve sustainable development, and build a safer and more prosperous future for its people.
